Do you have pain in your lower back? Do your legs and feet tingle? It may be sciatica which is actually a set of symptoms with several possible causes, and your Pittsfield Chiropractor can help to alleviate the pain/tingling, and restore full use of your lower limbs.

Sciatica is actually a symptom rather than a cause. It is generally caused when the sciatic nerve (or one of the nerves that feed into it) become pinched or irritated, which reduces its function. This can be caused in numerous ways including: herniated discs, inflammation or barbs in the spinal cord, or a deformity known as Piriformis syndrome. Piriformis affects 15% of people, and occurs when the sciatic nerve travels through the piriformis muscle instead of underneath. When the muscle is flexed or spasms, it can pinch the nerve and cause sciatica.

Sciatica is actually a fairly common cause of lower back pain and leg pain. Simple habits such as sitting on a wallet can trigger sciatica, as can slouching or leaning. It may also be brought on by pregnancy when the uterus begins to press on the sciatic nerve directly.

In addition to pain, which may be severe at times, it can also cause weakness, numbness, or tingling in the lower extremities, and it generally affects only one side of the body. Symptoms of sciatica may vary a great deal depending on which specific nerve is affected, and different people may experience different symptoms.

Each person is "designed" differently and its effects may vary from one person to the next. A Chiropractor can perform adjustments to relieve the pressure on the nerve, and may prescribe various exercises to strengthen muscles that are not performing optimally.

Regular visits to your Pittsfield Chiropractor will allow you to lead a full and normal life without the pain of sciatica. Through adjustments, exercises and changes in habits, your Chiropractor can keep you feeling your best.
